As I mentioned in the previous post when I talked about affiliate marketing models, there are two primary models that will be distinguishing between and in this series. They are known as:

Affiliate Physical, and
Affiliate Digital

I could just write about just one model but I elected to show you both because that is what is going to enable you to reach the greatest height as an affiliate marketer.

The main goal of this series of posts is becoming great in affiliate marketing of any type of product, whether it’s physical or digital. It’s about putting all of the power in your hands.

The benefits of affiliate marketing mastery

The benefits of mastery are numerous:

1. Unlimited Niches – There are virtually unlimited number of niches you can tap into. You are not restricted to the digital world, nor to the physical product world. You’ll be master of both worlds which together represent all of the products on the planet.

2. In-dept Understanding – Knowing how to effectively utilize both models will of course, lead to true in-depth understanding of affiliate marketing.

Why we want to take this approach?

It all boils down to how people are searching for products online.

Let me explain this in more detail…

The key point is how to obtain search engine rankings. So, it’s important that you really understand the mindset of people who are using the search engines.

If someone is searching for a physical product, they typically will go to Google and type the product name in the Google. And it’s highly likely that someone typing in the product name in the Google will be mentally very close to making a purchase – they already have a product name in mind.

Your goal at that stage is to show up at the top of Google SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) for the product name that the person typed in, and that is the part of the strategy.

However, digital products are different. Usually, someone does not think of some digital product they want to buy and then go to Google and type the product name. For whatever reason, digital products don’t gain product name recognition as frequently as physical products.

Instead, what someone will do is to type in some topic they are interested into Google. Then, if your website come up recommending them to buy some digital product related to that topic, then they may make a purchase.

You may be thinking that promoting physical products sounds more lucrative than promoting digital products but that is actually not necessarily the case. I recommend completing this series of posts before you make the final decision of which road you want to go down.

There are two distinct affiliate marketing models that will be discussing in this post. They are called:

Affiliate Physical – this is where you build a website around a physical product that you are promoting
Affiliate Digital – this is where you setup a website around a digital product that you are promoting

Two Domain Approaches

Within each of two models there are two ways you can approach purchasing a domain name. You can purchase an exact match domain name, or you can purchase a non-exact match domain name.

Why the emphasis on domains?

Well, your domain name is a key piece of your website, and it can have a significant influence on your search engine rankings.

Exact match domain names are beneficial in ranking more quickly for specific keywords. However, sometimes exact match domain names are not available. The point I want to emphasize now is that you always want to try to register an exact match domain name.

However, if one is not available for your niche it doesn’t mean that you go out and find a new niche. Usually, if you’ve done your homework and find a good niche, than purchasing a non exact match domain name is fine.

Sample affiliate marketing sites

I’ve collected some affiliate marketing sites that I will be using as a real world examples:

CapsiplexReview.com follows the affiliate physical model to promote a consumable product named Capsiplex.

BraineticsReview.com which is an affiliate site as well, but it’s also an exact match domain name model to promote an educational product called Brainetics.

BinauralBeatsReview.com is an affiliate digital site to promote downloadable audio tracks known as binaural beats.

ChickenCoopPlans.com which is an affiliate digital exact type to promote an eBook on chicken coop design and plans.

Focusing Your Niche

Your affiliate website should be built around a very specific topic or a specific product. Typically, affiliate digital sites focus on a single topic, and affiliate physical sites focus on a single product.

Let’s look at four sample sites again, starting with CapsiplexReview.com. The type is affiliate physical, the main keyword is ‘capsiplex’, and the product is a consumable called Capsiplex.

BraineticsReview.com – the type is affiliate physical with an exact match domain name, the main keyword is ‘brainetics review’, and the product is an educational product called Brainetics.

BinauralBeatsReview.com – the type is affiliate digital, the main keyword is ‘binaural beats’, and the product is “Unexplainable Store” which sells mp3 downloads.

Last but not least, ChickenCoopPlans.com – the type is affiliate digital exact with an exact match domain name, the main keyword is ‘chicken coop design’, and the product is an eBook called “Building a Chicken Coop”.

Why different models?

After all, both approaches are almost identical. The key word there is almost. There are differences when it comes finding hot physical product markets vs hot digital product markets, as you will be using different affiliate networks to promote physical products vs digital products.

So, there are little differences in an overall approach and process. Neither model is superior, and in the end they are extremely similar.

Why Learn Both Models?

Well, it opens the door to unlimited niches, and if you can effectively tackle, both digital and physical product markets, you will truly be unstoppable in the world of affiliate marketing.

Which model should you pursue?

The best answer is, any model you like! Again, it’s not about the model, it’s about choosing a lucrative niche and promoting a successful product within that niche. This would become clear as you progress through this series of posts about affiliate marketing.

In this post I’ll provide an overview about what affiliate marketing is, and how it works.

What is an affiliate?

An affiliate connects customers with vendors and earns a commission for each sale he or she refers. A vendor is someone who sells a product. They take care of the order processing and fulfillment. Amazon.com, for example, is a vendor.

So, if you sign up for Amazon.com affiliate program you can began sending them traffic through your website. That traffic will be trapped by a special link known as an affiliate link, and if any of that traffic you send to Amazon ended up purchasing a product, you would receive a commission from Amazon.

Affiliate Links and Cookies

An affiliate link will be provided to you when you sign up for an affiliate program. If you sign up for Amazon,com affiliate program, you would login to your account at Amazon.com and you will grab your unique affiliate ID. You will place this link in the various places on your website because you want your website visitors to click this link.

When someone clicks this link, a cookie is embedded in their browser. If they make a purchase at Amazon after clicking your link, Amazon would check their browser for any cookies. If they find a cookie that contained your affiliate ID, they will know to credit you with a sale. This, of course, all happens automatically. The bottom line is to get as many people as possible to click on your affiliate link.

Affiliate Programs

There are essentially two types of affiliate programs; the first type is run in-house, and the second is run through an affiliate network.

In-House Affiliate Programs – This is where vendor elects to run their own affiliate program. Usually, they use a piece of 3rd party affiliate software to take care of managing the affiliate accounts and tracking. The software will also usually calculate payments. It is the job of the company, in this case of the vendor, to processes and send out those payments.

Affiliate Networks

Many vendors, instead of running their own in-house affiliate program, elect to sign up with the network which provides the tracking as well as manages the payouts.

Affiliate Network Benefits

Affiliate networks provides numerous benefits to both the vendor as well as the affiliate. In the terms of vendor benefits, an affiliate network provides all of the tracking and since the appropriate payments for both the vendor, and the affiliates.

It also provides what is known as a marketplace. This is a consolidated listing of various affiliate programs that affiliate can browse through. Being listed within a marketplace like this provides vendor with greater exposure to potential affiliates.

Affiliate networks also provide numerous benefits to affiliates:

They provide one-stop shop where an affiliate can easily identify the products they want to promote and the vendors that they would like to work with
An affiliate can promote multiple offers from multiple vendors and all of the tracking and earnings will be reported and displayed in one central location that the affiliate can access
Consolidated paychecks – affiliates can promote multiple offers within the network and all of their earnings will be consolidated.

There are literally dozens of affiliate networks out there. You can do a search for ‘affiliate networks’ on Google, and you’ll find many of them. Some of the larger and most popular networks include:

Commission Junction (physical products)

Share-A-Sale (physical products).

CPA Networks

A CPA network is very similar to an affiliate networks. In fact, for all intents and purposes, a CPA network is an affiliate network.

The difference is that CPA network primarily support what is called cost per action offers, and action can pretty much be anything. In many cases, an action could be simply filling up an opt-in page, or signing up for a free trial, or also could be purchasing something.

The point is, in the CPA networks, the affiliate will be payed for generating whatever action vendor wants the visitors to take. This represents a big opportunity for affiliates – for instance, there are CPA offers out there that pay $30-$50 per lead.

In other word, an affiliate will be payed $30 to $50 just for getting one person to sign up for a free trial for some product. This is often very easy to do, and much easier for paying something up front like in traditional affiliate program.

3 Ways to automate traffic-getting

In the previous post I revealed an actual traffic scam that is currently being sold. That’s one landmine you just avoided. There are dozens more out there. Grab a coffee, Coke or water and get comfy. We’ve got a lot to cover here today…

When it comes to semi-automating your link building and traffic-getting, there are 3 main options for you:

1. Article directory submitters
2. Video directory submitters
3. Blog network/article syndication

Yes, there are other variations of 1-3 above. But, those are your primary options. Picking a decent service is tough enough. But, signing up with a traffic service is like putting the wagon before the horse.

Why?

Because first you need to consider what type of links (and traffic) will work best for you. I always recommend a “blended approach” when it comes to building backlinks. Use some manual methods such as creating a Squidoo lens, HubPage – or using other web 2.0 properties. Those work really well.

Use Comment Kahuna to get some blog comments linking back to your website. Also, syndicate some of your videos and articles. I know, seems like a lot of work, doesn’t it? But, it really isn’t.

You might be only doing 20% manual link building and the rest can be automated using software and/or services. Let me break this down and go into a bit more detail about those 3 link building options I mentioned above that can be semi-automated:

1. Article directory submitters

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you already know that Google slapped many article directories with a Content Farm label. What does this mean? Many article directories watched their rankings (and traffic) plummet in 24 hours. Why did this happen? Well…

Most article directories contain pretty much the same articles!

Yes, people “spin” or write variations of the articles they submit. But, they are very similar. So, you’ve got hundreds of article directories that contain similar (over spun, low quality) articles. Once these articles start competing for rankings, that’s where the problem starts.

One or two of those articles may get recognized as the original source – and get ranked. All the others, get ignored by Google. That’s why when Google recently cleaned house, most of those similar articles got dropped.

Their rankings disappeared. Traffic stopped. And when you are piggybacking off those article directories to send you referral traffic and give you good back links, you can begin to see the challenge here.

Problem: If less people are seeing your article on article directories, there’s less of a chance that they will re-publish your article.

That’s really the goal for most article marketers, getting their articles re-published. So, do I recommend that you ignore article directories? No. They are still valuable. But, focus on a handful of directories. Think quality over quantity. Sure, the thought of auto-blasting your article to 400 article directories sounds amazing – it isn’t.

2. Video directory submitters

Video is extremely powerful. I highly recommend that you submit your videos to the top video directories. Be sure to include a “Call to Action” in your video and a link back to your website to capture all that video traffic. You will get visitors. There are many options to submit your videos. You can do it manually, or pay upwards of $147 per month for a service to do it for you.

Tip: There are less than 10 video directories that actually get decent traffic and will help you. Most of the others are a waste because nobody visits them.

So, just like with article directories…as exciting as “we submit your video to 200 directories” sounds… don’t believe the hype. Some challenges with video submissions are similar to article submissions…

Problem: No guarantee that other webmasters will re-publish your videos and give you wider distribution. Most video syndication services are very expensive for what they actually deliver. When it comes to your videos and how you syndicate them… think quality, not quantity.

3. Blog networks/article syndication

Lately, you’ve seen these pop up everywhere. It’s almost too easy for any “guru” to get into the “blog network” business. I’m not great at math, but anybody can understand these crazy numbers!

Go buy 200 new domain names (cost = $2,000)
Go hire some overseas freelancer to build you 200 vanilla-looking blogs (cost = $4,000)
Web hosting = about $200 per month

Total Upfront Cost: $6,200

Do a big launch. Charge people $47 per month to access your new “treasure trove” of link and traffic-boosting goodness – 500 members @ $47 = $23,500 per month, and then sit back and watch as everything comes crumbling down.

Profit: $17,300 (almost 300 %!)

This is *exactly* what’s been happening lately. I already showed you some screen shots from a “traffic” service that I recently joined. Nothing but crappy blogs and bad content. Believe me. These type of services are everywhere. Why?

Because it’s too damn easy (and profitable) for some people to cash in on this. Lucky for you, now you know. Earlier in this post, I mentioned that I prefer a “blended” approach to link building. Using only one method won’t get you the best results. That’s been my experience anyway.

So, now that you are armed with what options are available and why some are better than others, what’s next? Wait until the next post and this will all come together and make sense.

Recently, I put on my little detective cap and found something SHOCKING. You’ll see the screenshot proof below. I couldn’t believe what I saw. This is highway robbery to the Nth degree! Once again, a perfect example of a service promising you big traffic, high quality links, and delivering you utter shite!

Pathetic.

It’s so easy to get conned these days online. Dozens of services will gladly take your money and deliver ZERO value. I know you want more traffic, you want to get good backlinks to your sites to boost your search engine rankings, and if you are like me, to automate things so you work smarter, without spending more time at the computer away from your family.

So, how can you tell the ‘good guys’ from the shiesters?

It’s not easy.

For example. I recently joined a blog network that promised to syndicate your article to thousands of blogs and get you good backlinks. I drank the Kool Aid, plopped down my Visa card and got hit for $47 for my first month.

What happened next?

A few days later, I checked to see where my content was being syndicated. That’s when the HORROR began (see screenshot below).
Dozens of services like this claim to help you “dominate” the search engines and get you loads of free traffic. Sure, the promise sounds great and all.

The price? Pretty reasonable.

BUT… have you ever wondered *how* these services are getting traffic for you?

Well, let me tell you. These guys are getting you TERRIBLE backlinks from crappy websites just like this one (screenshot):

Yes, those are actual (spam) blogs that gave me backlinks through a service (which I won’t name here) that charges $47/month. Once you dig a little deeper, here’s what’s going on behind the scenes.

The content?

I certainly didn’t write it. It’s scraped from EzineArticles.com and run through some over-automated auto-rewriter robot script. The content is ATROCIOUS!

Sidenote: It’s a well-known fact that Google now has the technology to auto- check proper grammar and word use.

Game over for that blog I showed you above. Google wouldn’t touch that site with a 10-foot pole! But, sadly many services follow this exact same formula. Crappy blogs, even crappier content. Bottom of the barrel backlinks – you pay for results, but get NONE.

Now, the reason I mention all this is because I know that it’s often difficult to tell what’s real versus what’s a hoax online. You walk into a restaurant and you pretty much know within 5 seconds if you want to eat there, right?

Not the case online.

Website looks fancy, but the product is total hoax. By now, you should already know that I do NOT believe in using shady tricks, shortcuts or getting thousands of crappy backlinks from spam blogs to boost your rankings. I’m all about long-terms results.

So, how can you tell which traffic-getting service is best for you?
